They cannot threaten you at all.
Check the Fair Debt Collections Practice Act and then get names, numbers, addresses - all the info you can on the businesses that are calling you - if you can tape the call, even better.
Take all the information to your state attorney general and file a complaint.
You may even be able to file a civil suit against the collection agency but that is up to an atty to decide.
